Almond milk has become the most popular type of plant-based milk in the US. It is made from blending almonds and mixing them with water. This mixture is put through a strainer to remove the solid pieces that remain from the almonds.

It has very few calories

Yes – almonds are high in fat (50%) and high in calories, however almond MILK is low in calories. The milk is diluted with water, which makes the fat content very similar to low fat milk (1% fat). Almond milk actually only has 39 calories which is 50% less than that of skim milk.

It is high in vitamin D

You may not be aware, but having low vitamin D results in fatigue, weakness and brittle bones. Regular milk contains vitamin D, however if you do not want to drink milk or are intolerant to it, producers of Enriched almond milk have added vitamin D. Almond milk can strengthen your bones BUT you need to buy the enriched almond milk. Because it is not a good source of calcium compared to cow’s milk, producers add calcium to it. One cup of cows’ milk usually has about 30% calcium whereas one cup of enriched almond milk contains between 45-50%.

Therefore, almond milk is a great replacement for calcium for those who do not consume enough of it.

You can make your own almond milk very easily as long as you have a blender, water, and a cup of almonds.

Here are the steps:

  • Soak almonds in water for 8-12 hours to soften the skin so that it will come off easily.

  • Put the almonds in a blender and add 4 cups of water. Blend until is all becomes smooth.

  • Finally, use a strainer to remove the chunks.
